GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable alloy that combines superb corrosion resistance and formability with functional mechanical properties. Its chemical resilience makes it versatile for numerous applications; however, it is predominantly utilized in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of Grade 430, available in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, the molybdenum-enhanced counterpart, exhibits the same valuable characteristics with superior corrosion resistance due to its molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the specifications for Grade 430 in flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms like forgings and bars have similar properties but with specific variations. The characteristics of Grade 430F are defined in ASTM A582 for bar products.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material demonstrates excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive environments and some organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when polished or ground to a high finish. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is on par with Grade 304, and like all ferritic grades, it has exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining variant, 430F, has significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to other high sulfur free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, a condition that can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, cool slowly in a furnace to 600°C, then quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can result in embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Annealing - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- If welding is necessary, pre-heat at 150-200°C.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat affected zone can be alleviated through a post-weld anneal at a precise temperature range of 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement remains unchanged.
MACHINING:
- Machining is more straightforward compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars offer easier machinability compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining variant of 430, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work hardening rate facilitates bending and forming, making it somewhat easier than grade 304.
- However, lower ductility limits the extent of very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be executed with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
