SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For applications demanding high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, annealing is carried out at 1,700-1,900°F (927-1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, with air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C) for 1 hour, followed by a water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975-1,025°F (524-552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, then air cooling.
In solution-treated and aged conditions, rapid quenching of smaller sections yields optimal properties, while larger sections or delayed quenching may reduce effectiveness.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition to Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged condition.
Forgeability/Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is best forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended for achieving optimal properties.
- The Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) alloy bar is notably challenging to form at room temperature, even when annealed. Severe forming tasks, such as bending and stretching, can be executed on annealed material at elevated temperatures of up to 1,200°F (649°C), ensuring mechanical properties remain intact. Hot sizing or forming is achievable through creep forming within the 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) range.
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) alloy bar is machinable using methods designed for austenitic stainless steel. This requires slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and substantial use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure precision and quality.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) alloy rod is easily weldable in both annealed and solution + partially aged conditions, with aging completed during post-weld heat treatment. It is crucial to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be done in an inert gas-filled chamber or using inert gas to shield the weld zone and heated adjacent areas. Techniques like spot, seam, and flash welding do not require a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) titanium alloy rod is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling, and to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon contamination during processes like forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can lead to a loss of ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Exceptional Corrosion Resistance
Ensure titanium is not used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
Comprehensive General Corrosion Data
General corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium across various media are detailed in Table 1. CP titanium demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance in diverse environments including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Superior Crevice Corrosion Resistance
CP titanium offers excellent resistance to crevice corrosion in saline solutions, outperforming stainless steels. It remains crevice corrosion-free under temperatures below 80°C (176°F) regardless of pH, even in super chlorinated conditions.
Outstanding Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance
Grade 2 titanium exhibits remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Exceptional Erosion Corrosion Resistance
Titanium provides outstanding resistance to erosion in dynamic flow environments.
Exposed to seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), our titanium alloy exhibits negligible impact from the material. Even in the presence of abrasive particles like sand, the effect on corrosion remains minimal.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium shows no significant hydrogen absorption when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under the following specific conditions:
- The pH level is < 3 or > 12
- Temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
- A mechanism for hydrogen generation exists, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit exceptional immunity to microbiologically influenced corrosion. While biofouling can occur due to the non-toxicity of titanium alloys to marine organisms, it can be mitigated by chlorination or increasing water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many other materials, titanium maintains its fatigue performance in the presence of seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates are consistent whether tested in air or seawater, showcasing its durability.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium positions itself near the noble end alongside stainless steels, usually behaving as the cathode when coupled with other metals. This means titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion while potentially accelerating the corrosion of the other metal. When paired with more noble metals such as graphite, titanium's passivity is further enhanced.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod distinguishes itself by showing no degradation in fatigue properties in seawater. Its fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain uniform whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod offers excellent weldability when proper precautions are undertaken. Due to titanium's reactivity, it is imperative to use an inert gas shield on both the OD and ID of the rod, ensuring the material is free from grease or oil contamination.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rod is welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone, and post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
