GENERAL PROPERTIES

The 317L Stainless Steel Pipe is a premium, molybdenum-enriched, low-carbon austenitic steel. Enhanced with additional chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, it offers superior resistance to corrosion and chemical reactions involving sulfite, acetic, formic, citric, and tartaric acids. Thanks to its low carbon content, the 317L Pipe withstands sensitization during welding and provides exceptional creep, rupture stress, and tensile strength at high temperatures. While nonmagnetic in its annealed state, it may acquire slight magnetism post-welding.

APPLICATIONS

The 317L seamless pipe excels in a variety of challenging environments, including sulfur handling, pulp liquors, acid dyes, acetylation and nitration mixtures, bleaching solutions, heavy coal, and petroleum processing, and numerous chemical compounds. Additional applications of the 317L alloy include:

CORROSION RESISTANCE

  • Exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance in highly challenging environments, especially where acidic chlorides are prevalent.
  • Outstanding performance in applications requiring minimal contamination.
  • Its low carbon content ensures high resistance to intergranular corrosion.
  • Effectively combats pitting when exposed to phosphorus acids, chlorides, bromides, and iodides.

HEAT RESISTANCE

  • All chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels boast excellent resistance to oxidation.
  • Maintains a low scaling rate in ordinary atmospheres at temperatures up to 1600-1650°F (871-899°C).

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS

  • Compatible with all common fusion and resistance welding methods except for oxyacetylene welding.
  • For optimal welding of Type 317L steel, use AWS E317L/ER317L filler metal, austenitic low-carbon filler metals with a higher molybdenum content than Type 317L, or a nickel-base filler metal with sufficient chromium and molybdenum content to surpass the corrosion resistance of Type 317L.

MACHINABILITY

  • Operate at low speeds with constant feeds to minimize the alloy's work hardening tendencies.
  • More resilient than 304 stainless, featuring long, stringy chips; the use of chip breakers is highly recommended.
