Type 201 stainless steel is an innovative austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel. This economical alternative to traditional chromium-nickel varieties like 301 and 304 features nickel substituted with manganese and nitrogen. While Type 201 cannot be hardened through heat treatment, it achieves impressive tensile strength via cold working. Initially non-magnetic in its annealed state, it gains magnetic properties after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is ideal for appliances, cookware, sinks, kitchen utensils, and catering equipment. Additionally, it finds application in automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trim due to its structural strength. However, it is less suitable for outdoor structural uses due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater.
