Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel. This low-cost alternative to Cr-Ni stainless steels such as 301 and 304 replaces nickel with manganese and nitrogen. While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Initially non-magnetic in the annealed state, it becomes magnetic after cold working. Frequently used in appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, and catering equipment, 201-grade stainless steel also finds applications in automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trim due to its structural strength. However, it is not recommended for outdoor structural uses due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from factors like seawater.
