What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a super duplex alloy featuring a low carbon content (up to 0.03%) and a unique composition of chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Engineered for demanding applications requiring exceptional strength and corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 stainless steel excels in chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater environments. It offers robust resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, and its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content deliver superior protection against pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The production of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors that of other high-alloy steels. Using an electric arc furnace, scrap steel is melted and alloyed to achieve desired properties. The molten steel is then processed in an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where crucial steps like decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases are performed.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is added to enhance the steel's properties. The molten steel then moves to the ladle furnace for further refinement and inclusion adjustment.
- After initial processing, the molten steel undergoes casting, either forming large ingots or continuously produced blooms. These solid steel forms are reheated and then forged or rolled to the specified thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, the steel is subjected to solution annealing followed by water quenching.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be shaped using hot or cold forming methods. During hot forming, temperatures should be maintained between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post-hot forming, solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C, followed by rapid water quenching, is necessary. Cold forming processes like bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing also require subsequent solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as super duplex stainless steel, characterized by a microstructure containing both ferrite and austenite in equal proportions. This dual-phase structure endows it with high corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. Each duplex steel grade offers different corrosion resistance levels, varying by alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number), with super duplex stainless steel having a PREN range of 38 to 45.
