Type 321 stainless steel is an austenitic steel that offers unique benefits. While sharing properties with Type 304, it boasts increased titanium and carbon content. This combination grants superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, along with exceptional toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. The presence of titanium is key, preventing harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld and offering partial protection against intergranular corrosion. It also reduces embrittlement in high-risk areas. Type 321H is particularly valuable in applications involving parts heated to 800°F-1500°F and exposed to corrosive atmospheres. With more nickel and titanium stabilization, Type 321 maintains its corrosion resistance by avoiding chromium carbide formation at the grain boundaries, especially during exposure to critical temperatures. This grade also hardens well with cold working, is easily weldable, and rarely requires post-weld annealing.

GENERAL PROPERTIES

• 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel renowned for its impressive overall corrosion resistance. This alloy excels in resisting intergranular corrosion even after exposure to the critical chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). It withstands oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and outperforms 304 and 304L steel pipes in terms of creep and stress rupture properties. Additionally, it maintains excellent toughness at low temperatures.
• Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) features a higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10), enhancing its creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). CORROSION RESISTANCE

• Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance on par with 304.
• Specially developed for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
• Suitable for most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
• Effective in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
• Can handle up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
• Resistant to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H can be effortlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.

HOT FORMING

• Ideal working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes range from 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
• Not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
• Post-work water quenching or full annealing is required to regain maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

• Highly ductile and easily formable.

WELDING

• Easily welded by most standard processes.
• Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary.

MACHINING

• The hardening rate of Alloy 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but is comparable to 304.
