316/316L stainless steel alloy is an austenitic stainless steel pipe enriched with molybdenum. This enhanced composition of nickel and molybdenum provides superior overall corrosion resistance, especially against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments, compared to 304. Moreover, the 316/316L seamless pipe boasts exceptional high-temperature tensile strength, creep resistance, and stress rupture strength. Additionally, it offers excellent formability and weldability. The low carbon variant, 316L, is highly resistant to sensitization, making it the preferred choice for large welded components.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Generally more resistant than 304 in various atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media, thanks to increased chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• Subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and to stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• Considered resistant to potable water with up to about 1000mg/L of chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to around 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Often regarded as the "marine grade stainless steel" - however, it is not resistant to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Displays excellent weldability through all standard fusion methods, whether with or without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for maximum corrosion resistance, unlike Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing temperature range is 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special consideration is needed to compensate for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most producers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C).
• Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types, being extremely tough and ductile, can be readily cold worked through processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., with ease.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L produces chips that are tough and strong.
• Use of chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
• Large tools and substantial amounts of cutting fluid should be employed.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens swiftly.
