Ti-6Al-4V - Grade 5 Titanium Tube
- Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)
INTRODUCTION
- Jiangsu Daxun Alloy Co., Ltd. proudly presents the DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400), the industry's most sought-after titanium alloy. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy is stabilized with aluminum and vanadium, offering exceptional strength that performs impeccably even at cryogenic temperatures up to 800°F (427°C). This versatile high-strength alloy is indispensable in annealing, solution treatment, and aging processes. Its applications span jet engine compressor blades, discs, and rings; critical components for fuselages and space capsules; pressure containers; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and other high strength-to-weight ratio forgings.
- The high-quality alloy fabrication begins with vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting is executed through one or two vacuum arc steps to ensure optimal material characteristics.
SPECIFICATIONS
• ASTM B338 - Standard for heat treatable titanium tubes.
• AMS 4928 - Standards for annealed forgings and forging stock.
• AMS 4965 - Standards for solution treated and aged forgings.
• AMS 4967 - Standards for annealed, heat treatable forgings.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
- Melting Range: 2,800-3,000°F (1,538 - 1,649°C)
- Density: 0.160 lbs/cu. in.; 4.47 gm/cc
- Beta Transus Temperature: 1830°F (± 25°); 999°C (± 14°)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For peak hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength, annealing is performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
- DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers multiple heat treatment options to suit various operational needs:
- 1. Anneal: 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C), held for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C), held for 1 to 8 hours, then air or furnace cooled.
- 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C), held for 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
- 4. Aging Treatment: 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C), held for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
- The pinnacle of properties is achieved in the solution treated and aged condition, especially when small cross-sections are rapidly quenched.
Larger section sizes or delays in quenching can result in properties that do not meet the optimal values.
HARDNESS
In the annealed condition, the typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34. In the solution and aged condition, it typically ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.
FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at a starting temperature of 1,750°F (954°C) and an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A reduction of at least 35% is recommended for optimal results.
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy presents formidable challenges when attempting to form it at room temperature, even in its annealed state. Consequently, rigorous forming operations, including bending or stretching, are feasible on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without adversely affecting its mechanical properties. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is recommended at temperatures spanning from 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
MACHINABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be effectively machined utilizing techniques commonly employed for austenitic stainless steels, with slow speeds, substantial feeds, and rigid
tooling, along with generous amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluid.
WELDABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube boasts excellent weldability in both the annealed state and the solution-treated and partially aged conditions, with ageing.
- occurring during post-weld heat treatment. It is critical to take precautions to prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be executed within an inert gas-filled chamber or by applying an inert gas tail shield to the molten metal and the adjacent hot zone. Additionally, spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can also be performed without necessitating a protective environment.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to hydrogen contamination due to improper pickling and the absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Such contamination can detrimentally impact ductility, increasing notch sensitivity and impairing forming properties.
