The 904 Alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic marvel engineered to withstand severe corrosion, boasting exceptional corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic alloy with a low carbon content. This high-alloy steel, enriched with copper, excels in resisting strong reducing acids, such as sulfuric acid. It is impervious to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion, showcasing non-magnetic properties and superior formability, toughness, and welding capabilities. The 904L grade includes high concentrations of premium elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel boasts remarkable resistance to hot seawater and chloride attacks. Its high nickel content fortifies it against stress corrosion cracking. Copper addition enhances its resilience to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both harsh and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L lies between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and typical 316L austenitic steel. Compared to 304L and 310L grades, which lack molybdenum, 904L offers superior resistance. To maximize its resistance to stress corrosion cracking in sensitive contexts, this grade requires solution treatment post-cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes demonstrate outstanding resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This high resistance to stress corrosion cracking is attributed to the significant nickel content in its composition. Additionally, the presence of copper enhances resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, making it effective in both harsh and mild environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L is intermediate between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. Grade 904L is less resistant compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum. To maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments, this steel grade must undergo solution treatment following cold working.
Grade 904L stainless steels offer commendable oxidation resistance. However, the structural stability of this grade degrades at elevated temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be solution heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is optimal for hardening these grades.
Welding of grade 904L stainless steels can be executed using all conventional methods. This grade does not necessitate pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. However, grade 904L can experience hot cracking in constrained weldments. For welding grade 904L steels, grade 904L electrodes and rods compliant with AS 1554.6 are utilized.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high purity steels with minimal sulfur content. They are easily machined using standard methods and can be readily bent to a small radius under cold conditions. Subsequent annealing is generally not required unless the fabrication is performed under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
