ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure above this threshold results in embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked condition with yield strength surpassing 160 ksi, maintaining good toughness down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is amenable to cold forming, but due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Post-forming annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

With superior fatigue strength, it excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the harshest conditions.
Manufacturers typically recommend a maximum hot forming temperature of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If not uniformly heated, cooler edges may cause cracking.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube offers exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its significant strength can pose challenges. Even with robust equipment, the increased springback due to the high strength of Duplex 2205 must be factored into your calculations.
Machining Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel is somewhat more challenging than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to faster tool wear. Follow these guidelines for optimal machining: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Limit the tool nose radius to essential length, ensuring the carbide edge remains sharp yet strong; D) Sequence machining operations so that the depth of cut is consistently below the work-hardened layer from prior operations.
