ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures can result in embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can also be provided in the cold-worked condition with a yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, maintaining excellent toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is suitable for cold forming, though it requires attention due to its high work-hardening rate. Intermediate anneals may be necessary. Post-forming annealing is recommended for optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a unique blend of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel, composed of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts double the yield strength of regular austenitic grades. This superior strength is complemented by excellent fatigue resistance and unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, and general corrosion, even in the most challenging conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniformly heated, cooler edges may risk cracking.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube is renowned for its exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with sufficiently powerful equipment, the substantial springback due to the grade's high strength must be carefully considered.
Duplex 2205 presents a slightly higher machining challenge compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The increased cutting forces lead to quicker tool wear. Here are some essential machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful and rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is not excessively long to maintain a sharp edge while providing necessary strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to keep the depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
