904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic marvel engineered for extreme corrosion resistance. Its robust composition ensures superior durability and longevity.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. Enriched with copper, this high alloy thrives in strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. It resists stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic, 904L excels in formability, toughness, and welding. The high levels of molybdenum and nickel enhance its premium properties.
904L grade stainless steel offers exceptional resistance to hot seawater and chloride attack. Its high nickel content ensures superior stress corrosion cracking resistance. Copper addition boosts resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, whether in harsh or mild environments. The corrosion resistance lands between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. While more susceptible than 304L and 310L grades, it achieves peak resistance to stress corrosion cracking when solution-treated after cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes exhibit outstanding resistance to warm seawater and chloride-induced corrosion. The superior stress corrosion cracking resistance is attributed to the high nickel content. Additionally, the incorporation of copper enhances resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, providing exceptional durability in both harsh and moderate environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L is intermediate between super austenitic grades containing 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic grades. While it is less resistant compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, grade 904L requires solution treatment post-cold working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical conditions.
Grade 904L stainless steels offer good oxidation resistance. However, the structural integrity of this grade diminishes at elevated temperatures, especially beyond 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steel can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090°C to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening these grades.
The welding of grade 904L stainless steel can be carried out using all conventional methods. This grade does not require pre-heating or post-weld heat treatments. However, it is susceptible to hot cracking in constrained weldments. Grade 904L electrodes and rods must be used for welding according to AS 1554.6.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are characterized by high purity and low sulfur content, allowing for standard machining methods. These tubes can be easily bent to a small radius under cold conditions. Although annealing is generally not necessary, it should be conducted when fabrication involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
