Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, meticulously engineered with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most prevalent grade in duplex stainless steel, it delivers unparalleled yield strength, doubling that of standard austenitic grades. This material excels in fatigue strength and provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most conditions.
- The chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content also provide remarkable resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Resilient against chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective at temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite ensures good performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, similar to other duplex stainless steels.
- However, due to the risk of embrittlement above 572°F (300°C), even for short exposures, it is not recommended for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits commendable weldability.
- Avoid welding without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it does work-harden effectively.
- Special measures should be taken to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most producers suggest a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, edges may cool faster than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in cooler regions.

Here are crucial machining guidelines: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with a sturdy tool and workpiece mount; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is as short as possible to maintain a sharp carbide edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence so that the depth of cut consistently remains below the work-hardened layer from prior operations.
