CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 offers remarkable resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can also be supplied in the cold-worked condition with yield strengths exceeding 160 ksi, maintaining excellent toughness down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be cold formed, though its high work-hardening rate may necessitate intermediate anneals. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are unparalleled, featuring advanced extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We boast one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a highly valued duplex ferritic-austenitic alloy featuring 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of common austenitic grades. With outstanding fatigue strength, it excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion under harsh conditions.
Manufacturers typically recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, cooler edges compared to the bulk may lead to a risk of cracking.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases outstanding formability across diverse manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with powerful equipment, the increased springback necessitated by this grade's strength must be carefully considered.
Duplex 2205 offers slightly more machining challenges compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, requiring higher cutting forces and leading to quicker tool wear. Here are some essential machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is no longer than necessary, maintaining a sharp carbide edge while providing adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to keep the depth of cut consistently below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
