CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 demonstrates exceptional resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Alloy 2205 has an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Extended exposure to temperatures above this threshold may cause embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in its annealed condition. It can also be provided in the cold-worked condition with a yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, maintaining good toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is capable of cold forming. Due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be required. Subsequent annealing is recommended after hot or cold forming to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are unrivaled, featuring advanced extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We boast one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel that contains 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of regular austenitic grades. Duplex 2205 also offers outstanding fatigue strength and superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even under severe conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edge may be cooler than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in cooler areas.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube is renowned for its exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. While its high strength can present challenges, it's crucial to consider the increased springback caused by this grade's robust nature, even when using powerful equipment.
Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It necessitates higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Here are key machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Keep the tool nose radius as short as practical to maintain a sharp carbide edge without sacrificing strength; D) Design the machining sequence to ensure the depth of cut stays below the work-hardened layer from any prior operations.
