CORROSION RESISTANCE:

WELDABILITY:

- Pre-heating is generally not required, making the process more convenient and efficient.
- Maintain inter-pass temperatures below 248°F to ensure optimal performance and prevent degradation.
- Achieve superior toughness in the weld with a complete heat treatment process, enhancing durability.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to approximately 1100°F, ensuring longevity.
- Be mindful: prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can diminish toughness in hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, heat uniformly to 2150 - 2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch for optimal results.
- Ideal temperature range for hot forming is between 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic, ensuring malleability.
- To prepare for hardening operations, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F for best outcomes.
- Cool forgings to below 90°F to achieve grain refinement and superior material quality.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Alloy 17-4 is suited for mild operations in its annealed (solution treated) condition due to its inherent hardness.
- For intense cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent cracking and maintain integrity.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is commonly required to achieve desired shapes without damage.
- Enhance stress corrosion resistance post cold forming by re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature.
MACHINABILITY:
- This alloy can be efficiently machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions, providing flexibility.
