904 Alloy (N08904) Stainless Steel is a high-alloy austenitic product renowned for enduring severe corrosion. Its robust corrosion resistance makes it an ideal choice for challenging environments.
904L Stainless Steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high-alloy steel, enriched with copper, exhibits enhanced resistance against strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. It also offers resilience against stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic with exceptional formability, toughness, and weldability, 904L is an excellent choice for demanding applications. The high concentrations of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel further elevate its performance.
904L Grade Stainless Steel exhibits exceptional resistance to hot seawater and chloride attack. Its high nickel content bolsters its ability to withstand stress corrosion cracking. Copper addition improves resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both corrosive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L falls between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. To achieve optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance, this grade requires post-cold working solution treatment.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes exhibit exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content in grade 904L ensures outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the incorporation of copper enhances its resilience against sulphuric acid and various reducing agents, both in aggressive and mild environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L lies between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. Although grade 904L is less resistant compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, it necessitates solution treatment post-cold working to optimize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels demonstrate commendable oxidation resistance. However, their structural integrity wanes at elevated temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels are amenable to solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening these grades.
Welding grade 904L stainless steels can be accomplished using all conventional methods without the need for pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. However, they may be susceptible to hot cracking in constrained weldments. Employing grade 904L electrodes and rods for welding, in compliance with AS 1554.6, is recommended.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with minimal *** content, allowing them to be machined using standard methods. These grades are easily bent to a small radius under cold conditions, although subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary unless fabrication is done under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
