CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Our products withstand corrosive attacks better than any of the standard hardenable stainless steels.
- They are comparable to Alloy 304 in most media.
- Our steel is corrosion resistant in various chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food process industries.
- However, it is subject to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant sea water for prolonged periods.
WELDABILITY:
- Seamlessly welded using most conventional fusion and resistance techniques.
- Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding applications.
- Typically, no pre-heating is necessary.
- Maintain an inter-pass temperature not exceeding 248°F.
- Enhanced toughness achieved in welded areas post complete heat treatment.
HIGH TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS:
- Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
- Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures may decrease toughness in precipitation hardened states.
HOT FORMING PROCESS:
- For forging, uniformly heat to 2150-2200°F and sustain for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- Optimum hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F while the steel is in its austenitic phase.
- To prepare for hardening, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Cool forgings below 90°F to ensure grain structure refinement.
COLD FORMING PROCESS:
- Alloy 17-4 is best suited for mild operations due to its hardness in the annealed (solution treated) state.
- For intense cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to prevent potential cracking.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is commonly necessary.
- For improved stress corrosion resistance post cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is advisable.
MACHINABILITY:
- Capable of being machined in both its solution-treated and precipitation-hardening states.
Mechanical Properties
- Type 17-4PH stainless steel offers outstanding mechanical attributes. For applications necessitating high strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance, Type 17-4PH stainless is a superior and cost-efficient alternative to high nickel non-ferrous alloys.
