The 431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts outstanding corrosion resistance across a wide spectrum of corrosive environments. It can endure cold southern waters with some saltwater resistance; however, it is less effective in warm tropical conditions. Overall, its corrosion resistance is comparable to or marginally lower than 304 Grade Material. For optimal performance, a smooth surface in the hardened and tempered state is recommended.
This material resists scaling up to 925°C during intermittent service and up to 870°C in continuous service. However, it is generally not advisable for use above the tempering temperature due to the decline in mechanical properties.
Full anneal is not practical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. Process Anneal involves heating to 620-660°C followed by air cooling.
The material is hardened by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately half an hour, and then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex or pre-hardened parts. Tempering should be done to meet mechanical requirements as indicated in our accompanying table.
The tempering range of 425-600°C should be avoided due to reduced impact toughness, although the impact is less significant than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat of 200-300°C is advised before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not required. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed condition, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes more challenging if hardened to above 30HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 allows for significantly enhanced machining speeds and extended tool life.
Ideal for nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products like plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
