Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most widely used of all titanium alloy tubes, accounting for more than 50% of the total titanium usage. Usually utilized in the annealed state, it operates at temperatures up to 400°C (750°F). Ti 6Al/4V is welded with matching or ELI filler wire. It offers significantly higher strength compared to commercial pure titanium tubes, with superior stiffness and thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity, which is about 60% lower than CP titanium). Additionally, it can be heat treated to achieve ideal strength and performance. Its advantages include strong formability, low density, and excellent corrosion resistance.

This grade is a perfect amalgamation of strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability. Consequently, it finds extensive use in military aircraft, aviation industry, rocket parts, precision-guided components, armor parts, ship equipment, military vacuum equipment, and other critical applications. The closely related 6-4, 6-4ELI variant is also used in surgical implants. It performs exceptionally well in applications up to 400°C, enhancing ductility and toughness in cold working conditions. With excellent specific strength, it is typically provided in the annealed state and can be heat treated to increase strength for various applications. INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the pinnacle of titanium alloys. This premier, duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy integrates aluminum as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer. With exceptional strength, it can perform at cryogenic temperatures, reaching up to 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is favored in processes such as annealing, solution treatment, and aging. It finds vital applications in compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure vessels; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and high-strength forgings, all boasting a superior strength-to-weight ratio.
  • This alloy undergoes initial melting through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting occurs in one or two precise vacuum arc steps.

  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cool
  • For optimal properties, rapid quenching of small cross sections in the solution treated and aged condition is essential.
    Larger section sizes or delays in quenching may result in properties below optimal values.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness is Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed state and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution treated and aged state.

FORGEABILITY / FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For superior results, achieving a reduction of at least 35% is advised.

For demanding operations like bending or stretching, this material can be annealed at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) while retaining its superior mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming can be executed efficiently with creep forming at temperatures between 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy showcases exceptional machinability, comparable to austenitic stainless steels. It requires slow speeds, heavy feeds, highly rigid
    tooling, and substantial quantities of non-chlorinated cutting fluid for optimal performance.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube offers remarkable weldability in both annealed and partially aged forms, with subsequent aging processes.
  • Post-weld heat treatment ensures peak performance. Stringent measures must be taken to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding is best performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield for the molten metal and adjacent hot zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding are possible without protective environments.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy demands careful handling to prevent hydrogen contamination during improper pickling and the absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treatment, brazing, and similar processes. 3. Solution Heat Treating: Optimize material properties by solution heat treating at 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed promptly by a water quench.
4. Aging: Unlock superior aging benefits by treating between 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
