Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China
Grade 904L:
- The austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is an advanced, high-alloy, low-carbon steel. With the inclusion of copper, this grade boasts significant resistance to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid. Additionally, it provides robust defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
- This grade offers exceptional formability and weldability, remaining non-magnetic under all conditions. Its austenitic structure endows it with excellent toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
- Nickel and molybdenum, two premium elements, are present in substantial quantities in 904L Stainless Steel. While Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) is now cost-effective and performs admirably in many applications previously dominated by 904L, the latter is being used less frequently.
Corrosion Resistance:
- 904L Stainless Steel boasts excellent resilience to a wide range of harsh conditions, particularly its original development's resistance to sulfuric acid. It performs exceptionally well in warm seawater and other high chloride environments, demonstrated by a PRE of 35. The high nickel content offers significantly superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to typical austenitic grades. Copper enhances resistance to sulfuric and other reducing acids, especially in the aggressively corrosive 'mid concentration' range.
- The corrosion performance of 904L is generally intermediate between that of standard austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades containing 6% molybdenum or equivalent content.
- Compared to molybdenum-free grades such as 304L and 310L, 904L offers superior resistance to corrosive environments.
- Post cold work, the steel should undergo solution treatment to maximize resistance to stress corrosion cracking in challenging conditions.
Heat Resistance:
- 904L Stainless Steel showcases strong oxidation resistance but tends to experience structural instability at elevated temperatures, leading to the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. It is not recommended for use above 550°C. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code restricts its design stress values to temperatures up to 371°C.
Heat Treatment:
- Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. This grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.
Welding:
- 904L Stainless Steel is amenable to all common welding techniques. Because of its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, particularly in restrained weldments; caution is advised. Pre-heating is not recommended, and post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for 904L welding.
Fabrication:
- As a high purity, low sulfur grade, 904L does not machine as easily as grades designed explicitly for machinability. Nonetheless, conventional methods can be employed effectively. Achieving a small radius of bend is straightforward, primarily performed cold. While subsequent annealing is generally not required, it should be considered in environments with severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.

- 904L Stainless Steel is ideal for: Sulphuric, phosphoric, and acetic acid processing plants. Pulp and paper processing. Gas scrubbing plant components. Seawater cooling equipment. Oil refinery components. Wires in electrostatic precipitators.
Specified Properties:
- As per ASTM A240M, these characteristics are mandated for flat rolled products (plates, sheets, and coils). Other products such as pipe, tube, and bar have similar, though not always identical, properties listed in their specific specifications.
