Type 321 stainless steel stands out as an austenitic steel, sharing many characteristics with Type 304 but enhanced with higher titanium and carbon content. This unique composition grants metal fabricators outstanding corrosion and oxidation resistance, as well as exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures. Titanium in 321 stainless steel offers several advantages: it prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the weld, provides partial protection against intergranular corrosion, and reduces embrittlement in high-risk weld zones. 321H stainless steel is particularly suitable for applications involving parts heated to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and exposed to corrosive atmospheres. By including more nickel and being stabilized with titanium, 321 stainless steel prevents the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, thus maintaining its corrosion resistance during exposure to critical temperatures. This grade excels in cold working, is easily weldable, and rarely requires post-weld annealing, ensuring exceptional performance in various corrosive environments.

General Properties

  • The 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a premium titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel, boasting exceptional overall corrosion resistance. It withstands intergranular corrosion following exposure to the critical chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). This alloy resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C), surpassing 304 and 304L steel pipes with superior creep and stress rupture properties. Additionally, it offers excellent low-temperature toughness.
  • Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S32109) features a higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10), enhancing its creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). This elevated carbon content often allows for dual certification of the plate.
  • Alloy 321 can be toughened exclusively through cold working, making it easily weldable and processable with standard shop fabrication techniques.

Corrosion Resistance

  • Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance, comparable to 304.
  • Optimized for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
  • Ideal for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
  • Suitable for use in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
  • Effective in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
  • Resistant to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
  • Applicable in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
  • Not recommended for chloride solutions, even in minimal concentrations, or sulfuric acid service.

Processing

Alloy 321/H is easily weldable and processable by standard shop fabrication practices.

Hot Forming

  • Recommended working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot processes are between 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
  • Not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
  • Material must be water quenched or fully annealed post-working to regain maximum corrosion resistance.

Cold Forming

  • Highly ductile and easily formable.

Welding

  • Readily weldable by most standard processes.
  • Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary.

Machining

  • The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel, yet similar to 304.
