Grade 904L:
- Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. This grade is now significantly more resistant to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid, because of the inclusion of copper. Moreover, it has a strong defense against chloride including stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
- This grade has outstanding formability and weldability and is non-magnetic under all circumstances. This grade has exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures, thanks to its austenitic structure.
- Our 904L alloy is rich in nickel and molybdenum, two premium elements that ensure superior quality. However, the rise of Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) has led to a shift in usage due to its cost-effectiveness while maintaining exceptional performance. Consequently, the utilization of 904L has decreased in recent years.
Corrosion Resistance:
- 904L is not only originally designed to resist sulfuric acid but also demonstrates unparalleled resilience in various harsh conditions. The material thrives in warm seawater and environments with high chlorides, highlighted by a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) of 35. With a high nickel content, it offers remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking, far superior to standard austenitic grades. The addition of copper enhances its durability against sulfuric and other aggressive acids, particularly in the highly corrosive 'mid concentration' range.
- 904L's corrosion resistance stands between the standard austenitic grade 316L and the 'super austenitic' grades enriched with 6% molybdenum and similar elements, ensuring dependable performance.
- In comparison to molybdenum-free grades such as 304L and 310L, 904L exhibits reduced resistance in highly corrosive environments.
- For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in demanding situations, the steel should undergo solution treatment after cold working.
Heat Resistance:
- 904L boasts strong oxidation resistance; however, it is prone to structural instability at high temperatures, leading to brittle phase formation like sigma. Usage above 550°C is not recommended. According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the design stress values for 904L are specified up to 371°C.
Heat Treatment:
- Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. This grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.
Welding:
- 904L can be welded successfully using all common techniques. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is susceptible to heat cracking in constrained weldments, which necessitates careful handling. Pre-heat should be avoided, and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 standards for welding.
Fabrication:
- Being a high-purity, low-sulfur grade, 904L does not machine as efficiently as grades specifically engineered for machinability. Conventional methods can be used for machining. Achieving a small bend radius is straightforward, usually done cold. While subsequent annealing is not generally required, it may be considered if the fabrication will face severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
Typical Applications:
- 904L finds applications in sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acid processing plants, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plant components, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.
Specified Properties:
- As per ASTM A240M, these properties are mandatory for flat-rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Similar properties apply to other forms like pipes, tubes, and bars, detailed in their respective specifications.
