Typically used in its annealed state, it withstands operating temperatures up to 400°C (750°F). INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the pinnacle of titanium alloys. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy features aluminum as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer. Renowned for its high strength, this alloy is effective even at cryogenic temperatures up to around 800°F (427°C). The ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is versatile, suitable for annealing, solution treatment, and aging processes. It finds critical applications in compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines, fuselage and space capsule parts, pressure containers, *** casings, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, and high-strength forgings.
  • This remarkable alloy begins its journey with vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). The remelting process involves one or two steps in a vacuum arc, ensuring the highest purity.

SPECIFICATIONS

HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is essential where high hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength are required.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers multiple heat treatment avenues.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool.
  • To achieve the finest properties in the solution treated and aged state, small cross sections should be rapidly quenched.
    Larger section sizes or a delay in quenching may result in suboptimal properties.

HARDNESS

In the annealed condition, typical hardness is Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes should be forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with forging completed at 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal outcomes, a minimum reduction of 35% is recommended.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy stands out for its challenging formability at room temperature, even after annealing. However, this material reveals its true potential at elevated temperatures. Rigorous forming operations such as bending or stretching can be performed on annealed material at temperatures as high as 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is used effectively within the temperature range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be machined employing techniques similar to those used for austenitic stainless steels. This includes using slow speeds, heavy feeds, and rigid
    tooling, along with ample application of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure precision and quality.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube exhibits excellent weldability in both annealed and solution-treated, partially aged forms.
  • Welding should be followed by post-weld heat treatment to achieve optimal aging. It's crucial to prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be safely conducted in an inert gas-filled environment or with an inert gas tail shield to protect the molten metal and surrounding hot zones. Methods such as spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can also be performed without the need for a protective atmosphere.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • To maintain its superior qualities, DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy must be protected from hydrogen contamination due to improper pickling, and from the absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Such contamination could significantly reduce ductility, impacting notch sensitivity and formability.

1. Annealing: Elevate to 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C), maintain for ½ to 2 hours, then cool in air or furnace for optimal structural stability.
2. Stress Relief Annealing: Heat to 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling to alleviate internal stresses.
3. Solution Heat Treating: Achieve peak performance by heating to 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C) for 1 hour, then rapidly quenching in water.
4. Aging: Heat to 975-1,025°F (524-552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, then air cool to enhance mechanical properties and durability.

Optimum Properties

Achieve optimal properties with small cross-sections and rapid quenching. Larger cross-sections or delayed quenching could lead to suboptimal results.
