WELDABILITY:

  • Our 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Rod can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance methods.
  • Please avoid joining by oxyacetylene welding to maintain integrity.
  • Pre-heating is generally unnecessary.
  • Maintain an inter-pass temperature below 248°F for optimal results.
  • Achieve superior toughness in the weld by performing a complete heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Enjoy excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F with our high-quality stainless steel.
  • Be cautious: Long-term exposure to elevated temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, uniformly heat to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch.
  • The ideal temperature range for hot forming is 650-900°F, ensuring the steel remains austenitic.
  • Post-forging, re-heat treat at 1875-1925°F to optimize hardening operations.
  • Cool forgings to below 90°F to ensure superior grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is perfect for mild operations in its annealed (solution treated) condition due to its inherent hardness.
  • For severe cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to prevent potential cracking.
  • A bend radius in excess of 7T is often necessary for optimal results.
  • Re-aging at precipitation-hardening temperature post cold forming is recommended to enhance stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:
