CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Engineered to withstand corrosive attacks far superior to any standard hardenable stainless steels.
  • Comparable to the renowned Alloy 304 in most media environments.

  • Note: Susceptible to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant sea water for extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • Easily welded using most conventional fusion and resistance methods.
  • Not suitable for oxyacetylene welding techniques.
  • No pre-heating generally required before welding.
  • Maintain inter-pass temperature below 248°F to ensure integrity.
  • Achieve superior toughness in the welds with a comprehensive heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Demonstrates excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150 - 2200°F and maintain for half an hour per inch of thickness.

  • Re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F to ensure optimal hardening conditions.
  • Cool forgings below 90°F to achieve fine grain refinement.

  • Alloy 17-4 is best suited for mild operations in its annealed state due to its inherent hardness.
  • Heat treat to condition H1150 for severe cold working to prevent potential cracking.
  • A bend radius exceeding 7T is often necessary for optimal results.
  • Re-age at the precipitation-hardening temperature post-cold forming to enhance stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Capable of being machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening states.
