Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most popular titanium alloy, making up over 50% of all titanium usage. Typically annealed, it operates up to 400°C (750°F) and is welded with matching or ELI filler wire. It offers higher strength and better stiffness compared to commercial pure titanium, although its thermal conductivity is about 60% lower. Heat treatable, this alloy provides superior formability, low density, and exceptional corrosion resistance.

Grade 5 Titanium Tubes offer a perfect mix of strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability. Widely used in military aircraft, aviation industry, rocket parts, precision-guided components, armor parts, ship equipment, and military vacuum equipment. Ti 6Al-4V is also utilized in surgical implants and maintains ideal properties in temperatures ranging from -210°C to 400°C. This versatile alloy combines high strength and toughness with excellent welding and processing characteristics.

Ti-6Al-4V- Grade 5 Titanium Tube

  • Titanium Alloy-(UNS R56400)

INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) is the most sought-after titanium alloy on the market. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy utilizes aluminum as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer, offering exceptional strength even at cryogenic temperatures up to 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is employed across various applications including annealing, solution treatment, and aging. From compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines; to fuselage and space capsule components; pressure containers; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners, and essential forgings, this alloy boasts a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio.
  • Initially, the alloy undergoes melting using vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). The remelting process is conducted through one or two stages of vacuum arc steps.

SPECIFICATIONS

• ASTM B338 - Standard for heat treatable titanium tubes
• AMS 4928 - Forgings and forging stock (annealed)
• AMS 4965 - Forgings (solution treated and aged)
• AMS 4967 - Forgings (annealed, heat treatable)

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

  • Melting Range: 2,800-3,000°F (1,538 - 1,649°C)
  • Density: 0.160 lbs/cu. in.; 4.47 gm/cc
  • Beta Transus Temperature: 1830°F (± 25°); 999°C (± 14°)

HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is performed to achieve high hardness, tensile and fatigue strength.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool
  • In the solution treated and aged condition, the very best properties are achieved in small cross sections that are rapidly
quenched. For larger section sizes and/or quench delays, properties may fall below optimal values.

HARDNESS

In the annealed condition, typical hardness falls between Rockwell C 30-34, reaching Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). To achieve optimal results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy presents challenges for forming at room temperature, even in its annealed state. However, rigorous forming operations, such as bending or stretching, can be efficiently conducted on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. Creep forming is also an effective technique for hot sizing or forming, typically performed within the temperature range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be precisely machined utilizing methods commonly applied to austenitic stainless steels. This includes employing slow cutting speeds, heavy feed rates, and maintaining rigid tooling.
tooling, coupled with generous applications of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.

WELDABILITY

  • The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube excels in weldability, whether in the annealed condition or with solution and partial aging treatments. The aging process is typically carried out post-weld heat treatment.
  • Critical precautions are necessary to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding is most effectively performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield to protect the molten metal and surrounding hot zone. Techniques such as spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be executed without requiring a protective environment.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to contamination by hydrogen due to improper pickling processes, and it may absorb oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Such contamination can significantly diminish ductility, affecting notch sensitivity and forming capabilities.

Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Pipe - Grade 5 Titanium Tube

Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)
Introduction
DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 (UNS R56400) is the leading choice among titanium alloys. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy leverages aluminum as the alpha stabilizer and vanadium as the beta stabilizer. Renowned for its high strength, this alloy performs exceptionally at low temperatures around 800°F (427°C). It is ideal for processes such as annealing, solution treating, and aging. This versatile alloy is employed in a wide range of applications, including compressor blades, disks, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure vessels; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and critical forgings requiring an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.
The alloy is initially melted through advanced techniques like vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting is performed in one or two vacuum arc stages.
Specifications
• ASTE B338 - Standard Heat Treatable Titanium Tube
• AMS 4928 - Forgings and Forging Stock (Annealed)
• AMS 4965 - Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
• AMS 4967 - Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
