INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the premier choice in titanium alloys. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy leverages aluminium as an alpha stabiliser and vanadium as a beta stabiliser. Renowned for its high strength, this alloy can perform efficiently at cryogenic temperatures reaching up to 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is versatile, making it ideal for annealing, solution treatment, and ageing. Applications include essential components such as jet engine compressor blades, discs, and rings; aerospace fuselage and space capsule parts; pressure containers; *** casings; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and high-strength-to-weight ratio forgings.
  • Initially, the alloy undergoes melting using vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM) techniques. Subsequent remelting is achieved through one or two vacuum arc steps.

HEAT TREATMENT

  • For achieving high hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength, annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is recommended.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool
  • The finest properties are achieved in the solution-treated and aged condition, particularly with small cross-sections that are rapidly quenched.
    For larger sections and/or delays in quenching, properties may be lower than the optimal values.

HARDNESS

In the annealed condition, the typical hardness is Rockwell C 30-34, whereas in the solution and aged condition, it ranges between Rockwell C 35-39.

FORGEABILITY/FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are best forged at 1,750°F (954°C), concluding at 1,450°F (788°C). An optimal reduction of at least 35% is recommended to achieve superior results.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is notably challenging to form at room temperature, even when annealed. Consequently, rigorous forming operations such as bending or stretching can be performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical integrity. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is an effective method at temperatures ranging from 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be machined using techniques similar to those for austenitic stainless steels, employing slow speeds, heavy feeds, and rigid setups.
