INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the most sought-after titanium alloy. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy uses aluminium as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer, offering exceptional high-strength performance. Capable of operating at cryogenic temperatures around 800°F (427°C), the ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is ideal for annealing, solution treatment, and aging. Its applications span across compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines, fuselage and space capsule components, pressure containers, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, and critical forgings demanding a high strength-to-weight ratio.
  • The alloy undergoes initial melting via vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM), followed by remelting in one or two vacuum arc steps.

HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is preferred for achieving high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Annealing: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling
  • 2. Stress Relief Annealing: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, followed by water quenching
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling
  • Achieve the finest properties with solution treated and aged conditions for small cross sections, rapidly quenched. Note that larger sections and/or quench delay might result in properties below optimal values.
    Larger section sizes and/or a quench delay might result in properties below the optimum values.

HARDNESS

In the annealed condition, typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are optimally forged at 1,750°F (954°C), final forging at 1,450°F (788°C). A reduction of at least 35% is recommended for best results.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy, renowned for its exceptional strength, poses a challenge to form at room temperature, even in its annealed state. Rigorous forming procedures such as bending and stretching can be effectively performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C), preserving its mechanical integrity. Introduction
DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 (UNS R56400) stands as the most preferred titanium alloy. It is a duplex alpha+beta alloy, utilizing aluminum as the alpha stabilizer and vanadium as the beta stabilizer. This high-strength alloy is functional at temperatures as low as 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is employed in annealing, solution treating, and aging. Its applications span from compressor blades, disks, and rings for jet engines, fuselage and space capsule parts, pressure vessels, *** casings, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, to critical forgings demanding a high strength-to-weight ratio.
The alloy initially undergoes vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting occurs through one or two vacuum arc steps.

Heat Treatment

1. Annealing: Conducted at temperatures ranging from 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
2. Stress Relief Annealing: Performed at 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, and then cooled in air or furnace.
3. Solution Heat Treating: Executed at 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, then quenched in water.
4. Aging: Conducted at temperatures between 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.

Optimum Properties

For the best mechanical properties, small cross sections should be rapidly quenched after solution treatment and aging. Larger cross-sections or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.

Hardness

In the annealed condition, typical hardness measures Rockwell C 30-34. When in the solution treated and aged condition, hardness ranges approximately Rockwell C 35-39.

Forgeability/Formability

The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Titanium Tube is forged at an initial temperature of 1,750°F (954°C) with final forging at 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended for optimal results.

Forming the DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Titanium Tube at room temperature is challenging, even when annealed. Severe forming operations, such as bending or stretching, should be performed on annealed material at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without altering its mechanical properties. Creep forming is suitable for hot sizing or forming at 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
